Differences between practicing SUP Yoga and Yoga

We could say that the essence of SUP Yoga is the same as that of Yoga, seeking union with oneself through the connection with the sea, which is ultimately the origin of all human beings and is therefore for us human beings, returns to the origin.

Yoga is an ancient practice that originated in India and has been around for thousands of years. This practice involves a combination of physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation to achieve its goal. 

Yoga helps to improve flexibility, strength, and balance, as well as reduce stress and promote relaxation.

As opposed to this, SUP yoga is a fairly new form of exercise that involves combining yoga with stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). It involves practicing yoga on a paddleboard floating on water, usually in a lake or ocean. 

The added element of the water provides an extra challenge to balance, as well as the additional benefits of being in nature and the potential for a calming effect from the movement of the water.

Philosophically we share many principles but in the practice of asana is where we can find many differences between practicing SUP Yoga and Yoga, even if you do not have good knowledge it can have fatal consequences. 

Here are some key differences between SUP Yoga and yoga.

  • The base in SUP Yoga

The most obvious and important thing is that in SUP Yoga we always practice on a water surface, therefore it is already a very important differential factor in the practice of Yoga. 

Yoga is typically practiced on a mat in a studio or gym, while SUP yoga is performed on a paddleboard on water. 

This means that in SUP yoga, the added element of water makes it more challenging to maintain balance and stability, which can help to improve core strength and balance.

  • The Asanas in SUP Yoga

When performing the asanas on an unstable surface requires specific adaptations for each one to carry out a coherent practice, without danger of injury. 

In addition, the adaptations in calmer aquatic environments such as a pool, lake, or river will not be the same as in aquatic environments where we can have more movement, such as the sea. 

Traditional yoga classes can include many different styles, such as Hatha, Vinyasa, and Ashtanga, each with its unique focus and flow. 

SUP yoga, however, is typically a more gentle and restorative practice, with a focus on slow-moving, low-impact poses that can be modified to accommodate the movement of the water. 

This means that the poses practiced in simple yoga may be more challenging and dynamic, while the poses practiced in SUP yoga may be more modified and relaxed.

  • The sequences in SUP Yoga

It is important to know that when practicing on an unstable surface, all the sequences and vinyasas that we are used to using on the floor probably also need adaptation not only because of the surface but also because your practice space is more limited than on the floor, you only have your SUP Yoga board to move and do all the practice. 

The movement of the water can make some asanas more challenging, as the board is moving and you need to maintain balance while doing the pose. This can make some asanas more challenging and requires more focus and concentration to maintain balance.

  • Breathing in SUP Yoga

The correct use of breathing during the practice of SUP Yoga is as important as in Yoga. Knowing how to follow the breaths correctly is essential to guarantee good practice and good breathing.

  • Nature

Another key difference between SUP yoga and traditional yoga is the connection to nature. Practicing yoga on a paddleboard on the water can be a great way to connect with nature and enjoy the outdoors. 

It’s a wonderful way to get exercise while being surrounded by beautiful scenery, fresh air, and the soothing sound of water.

  • Accessibility

Traditional yoga is widely available and can be practiced in studios, gyms, and even at home. However, SUP yoga requires access to water bodies and a paddleboard, which may not be as easily available. This can make it less accessible to some people.

  • Weather

Yoga can be practiced in any weather condition, while SUP yoga is dependent on the weather and water condition.

  • Safety

Yoga poses are performed on land and can be done with minimal safety precautions. SUP yoga requires a life jacket and knowledge of swimming and basic water safety.

  • Paddleboarding skills

SUP yoga requires basic paddleboarding skills, while in traditional yoga, it is not necessary.

  • Cost

Yoga classes and equipment are typically less expensive than SUP yoga, which requires a paddleboard and other equipment.

  • Community

Yoga has a larger and more established community and can be practiced in group classes or alone, while SUP yoga may have a smaller and less established community, and often requires a partner or guide to practice.



Ultimately, although yoga and SUP yoga are both physically and mentally beneficial, they are practiced in different environments and with different objectives. Yoga is an ancient practice that is performed on a mat and can include a variety of styles. 

While SUP yoga is a newer practice that combines yoga and paddleboarding and is typically more gentle and restorative. 

Both practices are great ways to improve flexibility, strength, and balance. However, if you’re looking for something new and exciting, SUP yoga is a great way to get out of the studio and into nature.
